Modernising Northern Europe's Leading Container Transport Service

Anders Nielsen & Co A/S (ANCOTRANS) wanted to modernise their digital ecosystem - web, iOS & Android. In addition, the company was tied to a vendor's proprietary technology and wanted to free itself from the dependency.

The decreasing availability of IT resources to maintain this legacy software and little or no support for new features was beginning to increase the risks to the applications running. I had the product experience to handle a project of this size and technical complexity to digitally transform their business. I led a of team of 3 UI designers, who helped me bring this vision to life.

Problem Identification

  • The architecture and technology was inflexible, making it hard to manoeuvre and update features and new requirements
  • Every update required a lot of valuable resources, including time and money
  • Strategising change management without increasing the learning curve
  • Cumbersome navigation & UI
  • Inconsistent branding
  • Poor usability of mobile apps

Logistics management before the re-design

ANCOTRANS Fleet Manager is a logistics management web app. It is the part of the supply chain process, that helps plan, implement, and control the efficiency and effectiveness of the flow and storage of containers, trucks, driver information and communication from the point of origin to the point of delivery of the container.

Designing for productivity

The next step was to explore layout options for the web app. At this stage, we also explored the implication of the company's brand guidelines on the visual design of the application. My goals was create a seamless UX, designed for productivity.

A modern fleet management system

After the stakeholder reviews, I did several rounds of user testing to combine the ideas into a unified experience. We finalised the information architecture, layout, nomenclature, visual design, branding and interactions. The new version of the Fleet Manager prototype is depicted below.

Heuristic evaluation of the Driver's app

The mobile experience for Drivers lacked empathy, the information architecture and workflows were complex to understand. The Android & iOS apps were exactly the same, not compliant with the operating system's HCI standards.

Reimagining the Driver's app

The next step was to rework the information architecture, navigation and core workflows - Log In, Jobs, Delivery Management & Messages.

Designing for mobility

The initial user feedback helped me take the explorations forward to craft the user experience for the driver's app. An easy to use app which effectively the maps the driver's user journey, keeping in mind the mobility aspects of their workflow. Accepting jobs, performing chassis check, navigating to pick up and drop points were designed to be accessible while driving.

Closing note

It was my honour to be part of ANCOTRANS' transformation journey, Northern Europe's leading container service. We managed to redesign all 3 apps in 5 months.  My role was to create a vision, product & design roadmap, a vision and style guide. Our analysis and designs will increase productivity and efficiency the fleet and the business. This project is currently in development.
